Scotland’s education system is world renowned and surpasses most countries of comparable size in Europe in terms of educational achievement.

South Ayrshire has excellent education provision and a very strong record in educational success for children and young people. In addition to success in national examinations and wider achievements, South Ayrshire Council has invested significantly in renewing our school estate.

 

  • In 2023/24, £45 million was invested in new or totally refurbished schools.
  • In the pre-school years, 1140 hours of high quality early learning and childcare is available free for children aged three to five years and eligible children aged two years.
  • In 2022/23, 526 young people started the Duke of Edinburgh Awards programme, with 373 (83%) completing the Award – this is one of the highest completion rates in Scotland.
  • Primary and secondary attainment is above national comparators in almost all measures. We also offer a very wide range of extra-curricular activities, including an outstanding instrumental music service and a range of bands, choirs and orchestras.
  • 98.6% of young people leaving school move on to positive destinations such as university, college or employment.

Wellington School is one of Scotland’s leading independent schools with an excellent academic record. Situated in Ayr, the school is co-educational and welcomes children aged 3 – 18 years.

Further and Higher Education

Ayr is home to the University of the West of Scotland and Ayrshire College, together offering over 130 courses up to undergraduate level.
